Case Study: Fire Alarm System Installation at Hair Salon in Downham Market, Norfolk

Proven Results

We were tasked by an electrical contractor to provide a fire alarm system to a 2 storey hair salon in the picturesque town of Downham Market in Norfolk.

Following a survey we quickly identified that given the building had just been refurbished that this installation would have to be completed fully in PVC conduit.

We opted for a Fike Twinflex 2 zone fire alarm system with one zone covering each floor level in the property. We wired the entire system in PVC conduit containing our fire rated cabling inside preventing any of the red cable being seen. This was quite complex as it was an older building so a lot of intricate bends were required in the conduit. The system incorporates Fike’s multipoint detectors with inbuilt sounders and also manual call points. The multi point detectors suited this site perfectly as the salon has different areas of operation so detection modes could be set easily without the need for separate detector types. Using a twinwire system such as this has cost savings for the client as all of the detection devices such as detector and call points are installed on the same circuit as the sounders, thus reducing not only installation time but also cable costs. Compliance can also be aided with the need for 2 sounder circuits by installing a sounder on each zone used.

The entire system was installed over a weekend at no extra cost to the client – the first day (Saturday) we installed the upper floor as this was not in use on that articular day and on the Sunday when the business was closed we completed the entire ground floor. This meant that the customer had no loss in revenue, no disruption and most importantly returned to a clean and compliant hair salon on the Monday morning.
